Parasitic Effects of Varroa destructor (Acari: Varroidae) on Hypopharyngeal Glands of Africanized Apis mellifera (Hymenoptera: Apidae) Ciências Agrárias
Pinto, Fábio de Assis; Souza, Gabriely Köerich; Sanches, Marcia Aparecida; Serrão, José Eduardo.
The mite Varroa destructor (Anderson & Truemann 2000) (Acari: Varroidae) is one of the most studied parasites of Apis mellifera, as it causes many losses in apicultural business worldwide. Several research studies have demonstrated distinct levels of virulence of the mite and increased colony mortality rates due to its infestation; however only a few studies report the mite's effects on specific tissues, glands or other organs in bees. In this context, this study was conducted with the aim of studying the parasitic effect of the mite V. destructor on hypopharyngeal glands of Africanized A. mellifera. Mean gland cell areas for bees with and without mite infestations were significantly different. Variations in the number of vesicles and the presence of...

Genetic parameters for five traits in Africanized honeybees using Bayesian inference Genet. Mol. Biol.
Padilha,Alessandro Haiduck; Sattler,Aroni; Cobuci,Jaime Araújo; McManus,Concepta Margaret.
Heritability and genetic correlations for honey (HP) and propolis production (PP), hygienic behavior (HB), syrupcollection rate (SCR) and percentage of mites on adult bees (PMAB) of a population of Africanized honeybees were estimated. Data from 110 queen bees over three generations were evaluated. Single and multi-trait models were analyzed by Bayesian Inference using MTGSAM. The localization of the hive was significant for SCR and HB and highly significant for PP. Season-year was highly significant only for SCR. The number of frames with bees was significant for HP and PP, including SCR. The heritability estimates were 0.16 for HP, 0.23 for SCR, 0.52 for HB, 0.66 for PP, and 0.13 for PMAB. The genetic correlations were positive among productive traits...

Sequence and expression pattern of the germ line marker vasa in honey bees and stingless bees Genet. Mol. Biol.
Tanaka,Érica Donato; Hartfelder,Klaus.
Queens and workers of social insects differ in the rates of egg laying. Using genomic information we determined the sequence of vasa, a highly conserved gene specific to the germ line of metazoans, for the honey bee and four stingless bees. The vasa sequence of social bees differed from that of other insects in two motifs. By RT-PCR we confirmed the germ line specificity of Amvasa expression in honey bees. In situ hybridization on ovarioles showed that Amvasa is expressed throughout the germarium, except for the transition zone beneath the terminal filament. A diffuse vasa signal was also seen in terminal filaments suggesting the presence of germ line cells. Oocytes showed elevated levels of Amvasa transcripts in the lower germarium and after follicles...

Pollination efficiency on Ipomoea bahiensis (Convolvulaceae): morphological and behavioural aspects of floral visitors Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Araujo,Laene S.; Medina,Anderson M.; Gimenes,Miriam.
ABSTRACT: Pollination depends on morphological and behavioural adjustments between visitors and plants. Some plant species as Ipomoea bahiensis (Convolvulaceae) provide nectar and pollen to visitors and occur in anthropic areas, therefore becoming an important source of resources for the maintenance of native pollinating insects. However, what is the efficiency of each floral visitor species for the pollination of this plant species? What morphological and behavioural characteristics determine the pollinators? In this regard, this study evaluated the I. bahiensis flower and visitor morphology in a semi-arid area and the foraging behaviour of these floral visitors. Also, the efficiency rate of potential pollinators was quantified. Bees and butterflies...

Effect of oral exposure to the acaricide pirimicarb, a new varroacide candidate, on apis mellifera feeding rate ArchiMer
Riva, Clemence; Sokolowski, Michel B. C.; Normand, Julien; Santos, Jana Sopkova-de Oliveira; Halm-lemeille, Marie-pierre.
BACKGROUND The ectoparasitic honey bee mite Varroa destructor is one of the main causes related to the gradual decline of honey bees Apis mellifera. Nowadays, beekeepers utilize a wide range of different synthetic acaricides, organic acids and essential oils to keep mite populations under control. A previous work had shown that pirimicarb could be a new varroacide candidate. The aim of this study was to observe the chronic effects on worker honey bees feeding activity after an oral exposure to 1.05 mM of pirimicarb. Long-term effect of a 24 hours exposition to pirimicarb were also tested. RESULTS After three successive trials were performed, no mortality could be detected at the tested concentration, oral exposure to pirimicarb had significant effect on...

HERITABILITY OF STING CHARACTERS IN AFRICANIZED HONEYBEES J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
MELO,A.; MALASPINA,O.; DINIZ-FILHO,J. A. F..
In this paper we proposed to estimate the heritability of seven morphological characters that compose the sting apparatus of the Africanized honeybee workers. An experimental design to estimate genetic parameters was based on the method developed by Oldroyd and Moran(9). This method was modified to eliminate within-colony environmental effects associated with the additive genetic variance. The estimated h<img SRC="http:/img/fbpe/jvat/v3n2/image1800.gif"> values ranged from 0.17 ± 0.11 (maximum width of bulb of sting stylet and height of the valve of right lancet) to 0.74 ± 0.30 (length of the lancet).

Anti-inflammatory activity of propolis extracts: a review J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
Almeida,E. C. de; Menezes,H..
Since primeval times, the inflammatory process has been described in many different ways. Several anti-inflammatory therapies have been used in different biological models. However, in a recent "back to nature move", modern man is searching for natural products with medicinal properties, particularly those obtained from plants and bees. Propolis has been used in folk medicine for a very long time. The many compounds present in propolis require investigation.Physical-chemical analysis studies have not sufficiently established quality standards of propolis containing products. These standards should depend especially on their different pharmacological activities. There are few studies reporting on the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity of propolis...

Proteolytic activity of africanized honeybee (Apis mellifera: hymenoptera, apidae) venom J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
LIMA,P. R. M. DE; BROCHETTO-BRAGA,M. R.; CHAUD-NETTO,J..
Some properties of a Africanized honeybee venom proteases were determined by enzymatic assays in solution, electrophoresis in SDS-PAGE, and gel filtration. Bee venom extracts were obtained by reservoir disruption, selective dialysis (cut off 12 kDa) to eliminate small components, such as the protease inhibitor present in the venom, and then fractionation of the dialyzed extract by gel filtration on a Sephadex G-100 column. The optimal conditions for the caseinolytic assays were pH 9.5, 2-hour digestion at 37 °C, and 1% casein concentration. The proteolytic activity was also determined by electrophoresis in SDS-PAGE with co-polymerized gelatin with three major bands of 66.0, 41.6, and 25.1 kDa. A principal serine-protease-like mechanism was revealed in the...

Histological aspects and protein content of Apis mellifera L. Worker venom glands: the effect of electrical shocks in summer and winter J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
ABREU,R.M.M.; MORAES,R.L.M. SILVA de; MALASPINA,O..
This paper analyzes the summer and winter total protein content of 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 40-day old Apis mellifera L. worker venom glands before (control) and 24 and 96 hours after applying electrical shocks for venom extraction (experimental). During venom extraction, 7-day old workers responded more slowly and weakly to electrical shocks. This response intensifies with age, so that the workers approaching 20 days old respond faster and more aggressively to the shocks. Statistical analysis, using the non-parametric Wilcoxon and Kruskall-Wallis tests and complemented by the Jonckheere test, showed that the protein content varied from one age to another in the experimental group, which was well distinguishable from the values in the control Group in summer...

The presence of pharmacological substances myoglobin and histamine in venoms J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
LIPPS,B. V.; KHAN,A. A..
It is well documented that several pharmacological substances are released within the victim's body after snakebite. These substances are also believed to be endogenously present in animals, specifically levels of myoglobin and histamine that are reported to rise after envenomation. However, there is no published data regarding the presence of these substances in venoms per se. This research reports the detection of myoglobin and histamine in snake, scorpion, honeybee, and toad venoms by immunological test. It is unlikely that the rise in levels of myoglobin and histamine is due to that added from the bite, since a single toxin devoid of such components is capable of elevating levels of these substances. Nonetheless, it is likely that the rise in levels of...

Small synthetic peptides inhibit, in mice, the lethalithy of toxins derived from animal, plant and bacteria J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
LIPPS,B. V..
Lethal Toxin Neutralizing Factor (LTNF), isolated from opossum with having molecular weight 63 kDa, is a potent antidote for animal, plant, and bacterial toxins. This communication deals with the identification of a small fragment of LTNF eliciting the anti-lethal activity of animal, plant, and bacterial toxins when tested in mice. Purified LTNF was treated with trypsin to cause fragmentation at the arginine and lysine sites. The fragments were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and were tested against anti-LTNF for binding affinity by enzyme-linked immunosorbent test (ELISA). The fragment showing the most binding to anti-LTNF was sequenced. Synthetic peptides consisting of 15 and 10 amino acids from the N-terminal were constructed...
